Pumpkin Carving Tools
Most of us think of pumpkin carving as something we do because it is fun, because as far back as we can remember we have always done it, because all the neighbors do it and we do not want to feel left out, because our spouses decorate for Christmas and it is our job to decorate for Halloween and pumpkin carving is part of that, because there is a contest at the office, because a friend challenged us, because the kids are begging for it and are promising to be good, because … Stop! We all get the picture that none of us think of pumpkin carving as what it truly is—a real craft.
That is exactly what pumpkin carving is, a real, honest-to-goodness craft. Furthermore, pumpkin carving is not one of the easiest crafts, either. Just like every other craft has its own tools of the trade, so does pumpkin carving.
The following is the pumpkin carving tools list with some added information which I hope you will find of interest as well as useful:
1. Pumpkin Stencil: There is no reason why you cannot carve some beautifully artistic pumpkins freehand, especially if you are good at drawing. However, if you want to create carvings that are highly detailed, you will do better by using a pumpkin stencil. If this is your first time using a pumpkin stencil, do not let it scare you. It is much easier than it looks, honestly.
2. Pumpkin: Now that you have chosen the pumpkin stencil, you must have a good idea of the size and shape of the pumpkin that will fit the stencil. Go buy one, if you have not already done that.
3. Pumpkin Scraper: This tool is for cleaning out your pumpkin’s insides. You can also use either a sturdy ice cream scoop or a large strong spoon.
4. Scissors: You will need a pair of regular scissors for trimming the extra paper off the pumpkin stencil of your choice.
5. Masking Tape: This will be needed for attaching the pumpkin stencil to the face of your pumpkin.
6. Transfer Tool: This is used to make tiny holes along the lines of your pumpkin stencil design and onto and through the skin of your pumpkin. You can also use an ice pick, an artist’s stylus or even a thin nail. Each of these has a very sharp point so extra care should be taken to avoid accidents that will surely spoil the fun.
7. Carving Saws: Carving saws are absolutely crucial when attempting to carve finely detailed areas using a pumpkin stencil. You will need at least three different size carving saws:
-
- Large saw with a blade that is approximately six inches long by half to one inch wide for the major cutting like the top of your pumpkin. The top of your pumpkin can also be cut off with a large serrated knife.
- Medium saw with a blade that is about two inches long by one and a half inches wide for cutting larger sections of the pumpkin pattern.
- Small saw with a blade of two inches long by one-eighth inch wide for cutting smaller and finer sections of the pumpkin pattern.
To avoid unnecessary mishaps, do not attempt to use straight-edge knives.
8. Drill Bit: This is to use with a power drill. You can use a specialized pumpkin drill instead.
9. Power Tools: Believe it or not, you can use small power tools for carving your pumpkin and they will reduce your work considerably.
10. Paper Towels: Pumpkin carving can get quite messy, so you might want to have plenty of paper towels or rags to periodically wipe your hands, your tools, and your work space. You definitely want to clean up after you have completed. I know you do.
